about

The Church has been singing the texts of some of these Advent and Christmastide songs for centuries. They capture the sojourn of God’s people in particularly poignant and haunting ways. It’s a beautiful and sometimes maddening paradox to live in the piercing light of the Incarnation and yet at times feel so helplesly lost and defeated. Advent and Christmastide is the story we live right now. We wait again expectantly for the return of the King in power ... and as we wait, we sing these pilgrim songs. When we return to these songs every year we are slowly formed into a people that are no longer ovewhelmed by the darkness around us: Our hope is confident, our love is selfless, our joy is contagious, and our peace enduring.

Merry Christmas and Peace,
Paul van der Bijl

Track Name: Hark! 'Tis the Watchman's Cry
Song for Advent -

C
Hark! ’tis the watchman’s cry,
C_______G________C
“Wake, brethren, wake!”

Jesus Himself is nigh;
C_____G_______C
Wake, brethren, wake!
C
Sleep is for sons of night;
C___________F_____G
Ye are children of the light,
C
Yours is the glory bright;
C______G_______C
Wake, brethren, wake!

Call to each wakening band,
“Watch, brethren, watch!”
Clear is our Lord’s command;
Watch, brethren, watch!
Be ye as men that wait
Always at the Master’s gate,
E’en though He tarry late;
Watch, brethren, watch!

Hear we the Shepherd’s voice,
“Pray, brethren, pray!”
Would ye His heart rejoice?
Pray, brethren, pray!
Sin calls for constant fear,
Weakness needs the Strong One near
Long as ye struggle here;
Pray, brethren, pray!

Now sound the final chord,
“Praise, brethren, praise!”
Thrice holy is our Lord;
Praise, brethren, praise!
What more befits the tongue
Soon to join the angels’ songs,
While Heav’n the note prolongs,
Praise, brethren, praise!

Track Name: Twas in the Moon of Wintertime
Am
’Twas in the moon of wintertime,
___________G______Am
When all the birds had fled,
Am
That God the Lord of all the earth
__________G_____Am
Sent angel choirs instead;
C________________G
Before their light the stars grew dim,
_____Am
And wondering hunters heard the hymn:

Refrain
Em-Am____G____E7
Jesus your King is born,
Am_G___Am
Jesus is born,
Am______E7_Am
In excelsis Gloria.

The earliest moon of wintertime
Is not so round and fair
As was the ring of glory around
the Infant there.
Before their light the stars grew dim,
And wondering hunters heard the hymn:

Refrain

O children of the forest free,
The angels' song is true,
The holy Child of earth and Heav’n
Is born today for you.
Come kneel before the radiant Boy,
Who brings you beauty, peace and joy.
